We The Rohingya Human Rights Initiative welcomes today's decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that has ruled overwhelmingly in favor of The Gambia in its case against Myanmar for committing acts of genocide against the Rohingya.

It is heartening to see that the ICJ rejected all of Myanmar's preliminary objections to the Court's jurisdiction and has rather affirmed Gambia's right as a State Party to the Genocide Convention, to hold Myanmar to accountable to its obligations to prevent genocide, and to punish genocide. We now look forward to the process of the Court deciding on seeing whether Myanmar is responsible for those crimes. We see this as a significant step to redress the grievances of the Rohingya community and to give them justice long overdue.
