WELCOME THE STATEMENT OF MALDIVES AND THE GAMBIA IN SUPPORT OF THE ROHINGYA PEOPLE. INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE (ICJ)

We, at the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, welcome the statement of Maldives at the High-Level Segment of the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council according to which the Maldivian government intends to file a written declaration of intervention at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in support of the Rohingya people.

We are elated at the fact that Maldives has become the second country after Gambia to extend its support to seek accountability for the acts of genocide committed against the Rohingya people. It is heartening to note that, in this regard, Maldives has even chosen Ms. Amal Clooney of Doughty Street Chambers, a barrister and a humanitarian lawyer of international repute, to represent the state in the case before the ICJ to seek accountability and judicial remedies for the displaced Rohingya people.

We hope that, in future, more and more countries offer their strong support to Rohingyas in the way Gambia and Maldives have shown so that the persecution and the ongoing genocide of the Rohingya people is immediately stopped and their human rights be secured.
